In issue 47 of the print magazine t3n, Lisa Hegemann writes about the status quo, growth, and development of coworking spaces – a very worthwhile article. Here are a few highlights:

Growth of coworking spaces

Since the first three official coworking spaces opened in 2005, the number has grown worldwide, reaching 3,000 in 2013 and 10,000 spaces in 2016. The forecast for 2018 is 37,000 coworking spaces.

Commercialization of coworking spaces

One phenomenon Lisa Hegemann has observed is that many so-called coworking spaces (e.g., WeWork) tend to resemble traditional office structures: separate offices, employees instead of freelancers, founders or entrepreneurs.

What defines a coworking space?

This, in turn, leads to the fascinating questions we're asking ourselves here at coworking-spaces.info : What actually constitutes a good coworking space? Why are so many people moving away from home offices or office workspaces toward new forms of workspace?

  • Communication and exchange with like-minded people
  • Flexibility and independence from a permanent workplace
  • a breath of fresh air through new contacts and previously hidden connections
  • creative energy of self-organized starters and makers
  • Mobility - Working where it's summer :)

Definitely an exciting topic that we will continue to pursue.
